New York Red Bulls News Release
Secaucus, NJ (May 16, 2002) â The MetroStars and Italian Serie A giants A.C. Milan played to a 1-1 draw this evening in an international club friendly at Giants Stadium. In the first game, the U.S. National Team routed CONCACAF rival Jamaica, 5-0, in a doubleheader that attracted 30,659 fans to the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Tab Ramos, fresh off his announcement two days ago in Newark, New Jersey that he will retire at the end of the current season, scored the Metro goal off a Diego Serna assist in the 58th minute of play.
The New Jersey soccer legend beat the back line of the Milan defense to accept a long pass from midfield by Serna to knock the goal pass goalkeeper Massimo Taibi. The goal was the first by Ramos since June 24, 2000 in Colorado as part of a 3-1 win on the road.
The Italians opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Tim Howard misplayed a hard right-footed shot by Spain striker Jose Mari.
Each team recorded 13 shots and used their seven allowed substitutions.
Rodrigo Faria left the game in the 52nd minute with a sprained left ankle. The team's sports medicine staff will evaluate him Friday morning at practice.
The MetroStars will return to action this upcoming Saturday night when they face DC United at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live by MSG Network and broadcast live by WADO 1280 AM Radio. Coverage begins on both outlets with their respective pre-game shows at 6:00 p.m. ET.
