New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Thanks to some clutch hitting from Fernando Tatis and Mike Nickeas, the New Orleans Zephyrs came from behind to down the Iowa Cubs on Thursday, 5-1.
The teams were locked in a scoreless duel between starting pitchers Brian Stokes and Sean Gallagher through six innings, until Iowa broke through with a run in the top of the seventh on a bloop single by Casey McGehee with the Zephyrs' infield drawn in.
New Orleans rallied in their half of the seventh, however. Michel Abreu led off with a broken-bat single to center, and Caleb Stewart followed with a double into the right field corner. Tatis then drove a two-run single to left to give the Z's the lead.
Two outs later, Nickeas doubled down the left field line, scoring Tatis with an insurance run to put the Zephyrs on top, 3-1.
Gustavo Molina added a two-run double in the eighth to provide the winning margin.
Stokes (2-1) got the win after allowing one run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out five while walking two.
Carlos Muniz, in his first appearance since returning from the Mets, loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but escaped the jam by striking out Koyie Hill and getting pinch-hitter Corey Coles to fly out to right.
The Zephyrs and I-Cubs conclude their four-game set on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
