New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Casey Coleman allowed one run over seven innings, and Lou Montanez belted out three hits with two RBI as the Iowa Cubs defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs 2-1 on Tuesday night.
Coleman (4-2) allowed one run on six hits and did not issue a walk while striking out four in earning the win.
Iowa jumped on Zephyrs starter Sean West (4-7) in the second inning, getting singles from Chris Robinson and Jonathon Mota before Montanez cashed in with a two-out double, giving the Cubs all the runs they would need.
West scattered 10 hits over seven innings and struck out a season-high eight batters.
Joe Thurston put the Zephyrs on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.
Blake Parker and Scott Maine combined to pitch two innings of relief for Iowa, giving up one hit and striking out six. Parker put the go-ahead run on base with two out in the eighth, but struck out Jose Lopez to end the threat.
Maine earned his 10th save, striking out the side in the ninth.
The Zephyrs saw their streak of consecutive games with 10 or more hits snapped at eight, dating back to July 19 at Round Rock.
Mike Cervenak went 0-for-4 on Tuesday night, ending a 21-game consecutive on-base streak.
The Zephyrs return to action on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. for game two of the four-game series. Chris Sampson looks to go 7-0 as he takes the mound for the Z's, against Iowa's Dave Bush (0-1).
