Iowa Cubs News Release
Metairie, LA - The Iowa Cubs (46-58) got strong pitching from Casey Coleman and a big hit from Lou Montanez to beat the New Orleans Zephyrs (50-54) 2-1 at Zephyr Field tonight. With tonight's win, the Cubs improve to 8-19 in the first game of a new series and 2-11 on travel days.
Montanez delivered the game's big hit in the top of the second inning. Chris Robinson led off with a single and went to second on a one-out single by Jonathan Mota. After Coleman moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, Montanez came through with a double that produced two runs. Montanez finished with three hits for his first multi-hit game since returning from Chicago on July 6.
Those two runs were all the Cubs needed thanks to strong pitching. Coleman (4-2) worked seven innings and didn't allow a run until a two-out single by Joe Thurston drove in Brad Davis in the sixth. Coleman allowed six hits, walked none, and struck out four. Blake Parker allowed two walks and struck out the side in the eighth. Scott Maine allowed a two-out single, but struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 10th save.
Zephyrs' starter Sean West (4-7) also turned in a quality start, but got the loss. West allowed 10 hits, no walks, and struck out eight in seven innings. West Des Moines native, Dan Jennings, struck out two in a perfect eighth.
Tonight's win was the Cubs' first of the season when scoring two runs. Coming into play tonight, the team was 0-11 when scoring two runs in a game. Tonight was the sixth time the Cubs limited their opponent to just one run.
The Cubs and Zephyrs continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Zephyr Field. RH Dave Bush (0-1, 9.53) will start for the Cubs against RH Chris Sampson (6-0, 3.55) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:40 p.m.
