Round Rock Express Drop Opener to Memphis 10-4

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Nick Stavinoha was 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBI as the Memphis Redbirds defeated the Round Rock Express 10-4 in Tuesday night's Pacific Coast League series opener at The Dell Diamond. The Express (60-44) suffered only their sixth loss in 20 home games since June 18. The Redbirds (52-51) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
Stavinoha's sacrifice fly capped a two-run top of the first for Memphis, and the Redbirds never relinquished the lead. The Express got a run back in the bottom of the first on Matt Kata's sacrifice fly, but they could get no closer. Stavinoha added an RBI single in the third, and his three-run homer put the finishing touches on a five-run fourth. He added an RBI single in the sixth for good measure.
Meanwhile, Redbirds starter Brian Broderick (4-3) kept the Express bats in check most of the night for the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings; he walked three and struck out two.
Express starter Martin Perez (1-2) struggled through 5.0 innings and was saddled with the loss. He allowed eight runs on 11 hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Derek Hanks surrendered two runs on six hits and no walks over the final 4.0 innings; he struck out two.
Memphis out-hit Round Rock 17-9 as the Express failed to reach double digits in hits for the first time in five games. Joey Butler was 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Nick Green was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Val Majewski doubled and delivered a sacrifice fly in first game with the Express, and Chad Tracy was 1-for-5 with and RBI. Tracy extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Six Redbirds joined Stavinoha in the multiple-hits column. Donovan Solano was 3-for-5, while Tyler Greene, Allen Craig, Matt Carpenter, Aaron Luna and Bryan Anderson all had two-hit nights.
Round Rock and Memphis continue their four-game series Wednesday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Southpaw Zach Jackson (7-4, 5.95 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while right-hander Blaine Boyer (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to make his first start with the Redbirds after being acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals organization over the weekend.
