Odessa Jackalopes News Release
Odessa, Texas - Zach Zech tied the game with two seconds left in regulation, and Hampus Sjodahl won it in a shootout as the Jacks (16-19-4) earned an improbable 4-3 win against the Wichita Falls Wildcats (32-8-4) Friday night at Ector County Coliseum. Jon Flakne stopped 33 Wildcat saves en route to his third win as a Jack in as many games.
In the opening frame, Odessa failed to score on either power play chance despite outshooting Wichita Falls in the opening period, 12-9. At 19:51 Nick Rosa looked like he had given the Cats a late first-period lead when he deflected a shot from the point through the five hole of Jon Flakne. But after a lengthy discussion between the officials, it was ruled that Rosa had touched the puck above the cross bar, and the goal was disallowed.
In the second, Drew McLean rifled a shot from the point just as the power play expired and Gray Marr tipped it through the five hole of Justin Kapelmaster to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead at 5:49. The Wildcats would respond on the penalty kill when Adam Goodsir centered a two-on-one pass to Jeff Baum (7) who redirected the knee-high feed past Flakne at 11:32. The Jacks regained its lead less than a minute and a half later when Hampus Sjodahl (20) ripped a power play shot past Kap' just below the far hash at 11:32 to make it 2-1.
Eric Jaeger (5,6) notched a pair of power-play goals in the third period to give Wichita Falls a 3-2 lead. With 8 seconds left Odessa seemed destined to lose 3-2 but after an offensive zone draw by Connor Wood and a shot by Danny Kiraly from the point, Zach Zech collected the loose puck and wrapped it around the far side at 19:48 tying the game 3-3.
After both clubs failed to score in overtime, Sjodahl snuck a nifty move through Kapelmaster's (23-7-2) five hole and Flakne (3-0) denied all three Cat' shooters including Ryan Burnett at the end to earn his third straight win.
The Jacks and Cats wrap up their three-game series Saturday at Ector County Coliseum. Saturday is Old School Wrestling night featuring a meet-and-greet with hall of fame Wrestler Scott Hall starting at 4 Pm and live wrestling matches from 6-7. Meet-and-greet tickets are just $20 and include both the game and pre-game wrestling action.
