Amarillo Bulls Drop Hard Fought 6-4 Decision to Topeka

AMARILLO, TX - Amarillo Bulls fans seemed like they were in a time warp on Friday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. It was a blast from the past as the Bulls and their arch rival the Topeka RoadRunners were locked up in an exciting game similar to some of their games several years ago.

Three goals in a span of four minutes proved to be the difference as the Bulls dropped a hard fought 6-4 decision to the RoadRunners. The Bulls led 3-2 early in the third period and were hanging in against one of the top offences in the North American Hockey League. A shorthanded goal and then another 65 seconds later gave Topeka the lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Bulls rallied back to within a goal but a controversial penalty call for delay of game changed the complexion of the game and allowed the RoadRunners to sneak away with the win.

Forward Tyler Gernhofer netted the first two goals of the game and continued a string of scoring the Bulls last five goals on home ice. Gernhofer's first goal came off a face-off play from Charlie Singerhouse near the midway mark of the first period. The second goal was early in the second period when he riffled a shot past goaltender Tyler Johnson. The RoadRunners offence got rolling midway through the second with back to back goals less than four minutes apart. The Bulls worked hard in the last half of the period keeping the puck deep inside the offensive zone but unable to finish off a scoring play. Topeka had a slim shots-on-goal advantage through 40 minutes 24-23.

George Mika gave Amarillo a 3-2 lead in the first minute of the third period when he scored off a face-off-win by Joey Molinaro. The Bulls continued to fire pucks towards the RoadRunners net but were unsuccessful in extending the advantage to two. Topeka tied the game on a shorthanded goal midway through the third and then took the lead by two goals on a couple of quick shots. The Bulls power play got back on track as George Mika got his second of the game from Jeff Solow and Tyler Gernhofer at the 14:49 mark.

With the Bulls pressing down the stretch, Topeka was able to net a key sixth goal on the power play as a player was sent off in the final three minutes.

For the second straight game the Bulls outshot their opponent 41-37 including 18-13 in the third period. Each team had a power play goal in 15 combined chances.

The Amarillo Bulls close out their series with the Topeka RoadRunners tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7 pm at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. A hoverboard will be given away as well as a bicycle from Seven Grill and Bar. It's Scout Night with $8 and $10 tickets available at the Bulls Office only.
