Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah - Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Zac MacMath has been named the 2021 Jordan Guernsey Humanitarian of the Year for his wide-ranging and extensive work in the community.
"I'm honored and humbled to receive this award from the Club. It's been a very difficult last two years and our fans and community have been nothing short of spectacular with their support of not only RSL, but the Monarchs and Academy. As a Club, we dealt with the many challenges thrown our way this year, on and off the field. I hope as we continue forward as a Club, I along with everyone involved can continue to spread positivity and wellness for our community," MacMath said.
The son of parents who are mental health professionals who serve as community ambassadors for the homeless and veterans, education and inclusion has always been at the center of MacMath's life. In 2021, MacMath participated in Special Olympics initiatives, RSL Unified signing day and the Unified Sports Championships held at Rio Tinto Stadium in September. Additionally, MacMath played a role as a representative of the club in the Healing Fields project to commemorate and remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
MacMath was also named the Humanitarian of the Year for the Colorado Rapids in 2017 and 2018 for having played an active role in the Rapids' Special Olympics Unified Program while providing mentorship and guidance to the athletes. He also participated in soccer clinics for local nonprofits and military and provided resources for donations to the American Heart Association with the Transamerica Saves Campaign.
"Zac has been a tremendous representative of the RSL Way. He has been a proud supporter and advocate for the RSL Special Olympics Unified Team, Special Olympics Utah and Unified Champion Schools across the state. Zac has jumped at any opportunity to volunteer his time and efforts to strengthen the fabric of our community," RSL Community Director Kyle Schroeder said.
In 2015, the club announced that the Humanitarian of the Year Award would be named in honor of one of Real Salt Lake's biggest fans, the late Jordan Guernsey, whose passion for work in the community embodied the spirit of the award. Each player who receives the award is presented the award by Guernsey's wife Paola and their children, Izzy and Kyle along with RSL Community.
Prior to kickoff of Real Salt Lake's match against the San Jose Earthquakes on October 30, MacMath will be presented with the 2021 Jordan Guernsey Humanitarian of the Year award during a pregame ceremony following team warmups.
