July 28, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release
The Yuma Scorpions came into Sunday's game with hopes of heading to St. George tied for the lead, and disappoint their fans they did not, sneaking pass the Roadrunners 4 to 3.
It was a pitchers duel early and all through the game, featuring Mac Nelson for the Roadrunners and Mike Esposito for the Scorpions.
Esposito was able to get through the first three without a single batter getting to a base. His final line on the night was 7 innings, 4 hits and 3 runs. Although the 3 runs were scored on him, not one was earned since they came in an inning that featured an error that would have been the third out of the inning. Esposito would walk away with a no decision leaving the game behind 3 to 2. The three runs that scored all came across in the fourth, and other than that the Yuma pitchers were strong the rest of the night.
The Scorpions spread out the runs a little more, scoring 2 in the fifth and 2 in the eighth to win the game. In the fifth, a lead off single followed by an error would hurt the Roadrunners. Two runs would score, one of which would be earned. Mac Nelson would also have a strong showing although he struggled out of the gate, he was able to calm down and throw a great game. Nelson would walk away with a no decision with a line of 7 innings, 4 hits and 2 runs.
In the eighth, the Scorpions would send 7 batters to the plate to face the Roadrunners bullpen. After an error to start the inning, Yosvany Almario was able to advance the runner to third and get to second himself. Rich Janeway would be walked two batters later before John Segovia, who entered the game at the top of the inning, would be pulled for Fortunato. Fortunato would allow a two RBI single to Maikel Jova, but both runners would be credited to Segovia.
After pitching a great ninth inning, James Garcia would walk away with his 7th save of the season. John Segovia would go away with the loss and rookie Mike Martin would walk away with his first win of the season.
The Scorpions leave for St. George for the next three days before returning home.
