Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws used solid pitching in the first game and a 14-hit attack in the second to take both ends of a doubleheader with the Reno Silver Sox Sunday at Nettleton Stadium...the Outlaws shut out Reno 2-0 in the opener and rocked the Silver Sox 16-5 in the nightcap to complete a four-game series sweep of their regional rivals.
Chico left-hander Trevor Caughey, who entered the first game of the twinbill with a Golden Baseball League best 1.98 ERA, allowed just two hits in six shutout innings and finished with a flourish, retiring the last 11 Reno batters he faced and 17 of the last 18. Silver Sox starter Steve Russell was nearly as sharp, allowing just four hits in a complete game effort - the lone runs came in the bottom of the 2nd when Outlaws designated hitter Gabriel Riley delivered a two-out double to plate Jose Valdez and came home on Bryan Silverman's RBI single. Chico closer Todd Gelatka was asked to protect the Outlaws 2-0 lead in the 7th, and he was dominating...in fact, he accomplished the rare feat of striking out four batters in the inning to lock down the victory. Caughey (6-3) struck out five in earning the win; Gelatka picked up his fourth save of the season...Russell (4-7) was saddled with the hard-luck loss.
The second game of the doubleheader featured plenty of offense - after Reno jumped out on top with a pair of unearned runs off Outlaws starter Greg Bicknell, Chico responded with six in the bottom of the 2nd - with two out, Steve Boggs shot a bases loaded single to center to knock in a pair and tie the score...Jesse Kovacs then put Chico up 4-2 with a two-run double down the right field line...Casey Garrison then capped the rally with a line drive, two-run homer to left - it was Garrison's fourth big fly in as many games. A two-run homer by Ryan Brown in the 3rd sliced the Outlaws lead to 6-4...but in the bottom of the 3rd Chico sent 11 men to the plate and plated another half-dozen - two-run singles by Eric Pringle and Julian Benavidez and bases loaded walks to Garrison and Valdez put the Outlaws up 12-4. Kovacs laced a solo homer to right in the 5th to extend Chico's lead to nine...then after Reno scored an unearned run in the 6th, the Outlaws completed the scoring with three in the bottom of the 6th - Pringle knocked in newly-acquired Tony Torcato with a single to center, and Kovacs bombed another homer with a man aboard to make the score 16-5. Berek Fasking came in from the Outlaws bullpen to get the final three outs in the 7th and complete the doubleheader and series sweep of the Silver Sox. Kovacs finished 4-for-4 with five RBI; his 11 total bases set a new Chico single game record...Pringle had two hits and three runs batted in; Garrison added three RBI and Benavidez and Matt Ceriani chipped in with two hits apiece. Bicknell (4-2) got credit for the win...starter Billy Simon (1-1 with Reno, 5-5 overall) took the loss for Reno.
With the two wins, the Outlaw upped their second half record to 4-7 and overall mark to 19-34; the Silver Sox dropped to 3-6 in the second half and 21-32 for the year. The two teams meet up again Monday in Reno for the opener of a five-game series at Peccole Park - left-hander Jason Roach (0-6) will get the start for Chico, with lefty Jesse Hall (5-4) expected to go for the Silver Sox. Game time is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 6:40pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or AM 1340. The broadcast will also be streamed live on the internet through the Outlaws official website, www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
