York United Opens Season at Home July 30th

July 12, 2021 - Canadian Premier League (CPL)
York United FC News Release

The Canadian Premier League has today announced the remainder of the 2021 regular season schedule presented by WestJet. And it's been confirmed that York United FC's first game back at York Lions Stadium will take place on July 30 against local rivals Forge FC.

Each team will play a 28-game regular season in a single-table format. The campaign began on June 26 in Winnipeg, Manitoba with The Kickoff presented by Volkswagen and York United FC have already played five of their scheduled eight fixtures there.

Once The Kickoff wraps up on July 24, York United FC will come home to continue the season and play an unbalanced remaining schedule - 16 games against teams in their region and four more against teams they already faced in Winnipeg.

And what a tasty way to start: a spicy derby against the reigning CPL champions under the Friday night lights at a newly renovated York Lions Stadium.

The last time the sides met was at The Island Games tournament in 2020, when York edged Forge FC 3-2 in what was a thrilling contest.

"Like our fans and supporters, we are all eager and excited to return to our home markets and play in front of fans, including being able to celebrate with our Ottawa fans as Atlético has their inaugural match at TD Place on August 14," said David Clanachan, Commissioner of the Canadian Premier League. "The future is bright as we prepare to open our stadiums and get back to a regular schedule that allows our players, coaches, officials and staff to be at home with their families and friends. I want to thank everyone who is in the bubble in Winnipeg for their commitment and devotion to this beautiful game so many of us love. Thank you to our fans and supporters for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you cheering on your favourite Club at their home field."

For York United FC President/CEO & GM Angus McNab, he feels the timing couldn't be better.

The club has made headlines for their investment in young domestic players over the past twelve months and their superb performances while in Winnipeg has caused quite a stir. Now, fans can witness that growth and development up close.

"We are delighted to get to this point and present our schedule for the remainder of 2021," McNab says.

"We sit on the cusp of having fans return to stands and cannot wait for our passionate, loyal supporters to welcome the team back to the renovated York Lions Stadium. The Kickoff has shown our commitment to young, Canadian talent and I truly believe that returning to our home market having smashed the seasonal requirement for U21 minutes after just four games is huge in representing our desire to show the pathways and opportunities that exist for young Canadian players."
