York United FC News Release

Another iconic design, this time with a nod to the growing trend of football apparel's transition from sportswear to streetwear.

York United Football Club have officially unveiled their 2024 Alternate shirt, in association with proud front-of-jersey sponsor Carlsberg and expertly executed by Macron, the Canadian Premier League's official kit manufacturer.

The design sees the club's traditional blue, green and gold colour palette once again on show but this time in a radical checkered pattern, a nod to a classic fashion staple and the growing trend of football apparel's transition from sportswear to streetwear.

There's a traditional approach to the colour scheme but a modern commitment to the design, with the little details especially noteworthy. The gold trim on the sleeve is a retro touch, while look closely at each individual square and you'll spot an homage to the club's nickname, 'The Nine Stripes'.

The official launch video - filmed at the iconic downtown Toronto space of 918 Bathurst Street (home to the famed Annex Chess Club) - complements the checked design concept, revolving around a high-stakes chess showdown between a calm, composed heroine (Shannon Kenny) - proudly bedecked in a new York United shirt - and her increasingly agitated opponent (John Doyle) who is ultimately floored by her poise, purpose and precision. The match culminates in a playful reference to the official tagline for the overall shirt campaign.

The shirt was exclusively revealed on Morning Footy, CBS Sports' Golazo Network's flagship daily football show, with the panel discussing the jersey in detail.

York United FC begin their season with an away assignment against Atletico Ottawa on Saturday, April 13th, before hosting their home opener at York Lions Stadium the following weekend: a local derby with bitter rivals Forge FC on Sunday, April 21st.
