York Revolution News Release
The last professional baseball game played in York, PA occurred in 1967, when the York White Roses played their final game in the Eastern League Nearly 40 years later, the next game is scheduled to be played in York on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, when the York Revolution are slated open their inaugural season at Sovereign Bank Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05pm - weather and stadium construction permitting.
"Fans of the new York Revolution can now join me in circling a date on their calendars to mark the return of professional baseball to York," said Hall-of-Famer Brooks Robinson. "I'm looking forward to the inaugural season and to attending ballgames at Sovereign Bank Stadium."
The 2007 Atlantic League schedule was released on Thursday and the Revolution will begin their inaugural season on the road against the Bridgeport (CT) Bluefish with a three-game series beginning Friday, May 4. After three more games in Camden, NJ, and three in Somerset, NJ, the Revolution is scheduled to open their home schedule in York for the first three of 72 home games.
The first meeting between the Revolution and the defending Atlantic League champion Lancaster Barnstormers, will take place in Lancaster, May 18-20, for three games at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Lancaster will make its first visit to York after the All-Star break, for three games, July 13-15.
York will play 18 games against each of the other seven Atlantic League teams: the Lancaster Barnstormers, Camden Riversharks, Somerset (NJ) Patriots, Newark (NJ) Bears, Long Island Ducks, Bridgeport (CT) Bluefish, and the Maryland Road Warriors. The Road Warriors will play all their games on the road in 2007 and are expected to become the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in 2008.
Sovereign Bank Stadium, home of the Revolution, is under construction and is scheduled for completion during the summer of 2007. However, it is common for baseball games to be played in minor league ballparks prior to 100 percent completion, according to Peter Kirk, Chairman of the York Revolution.
"We have been involved in 13 similar ballparks and every one has played its first game prior to 100 percent completion," Kirk said. "Lancaster's Clipper Magazine Stadium, for example, started construction almost to the day that York's ballpark started its construction, and we played the first game in Lancaster on May 11 of the following year (2005). Hopefully, the winter weather will be just as cooperative this year in York, allowing the first game to be played on May 15."
Should weather or other construction issues delay the opening of Sovereign Bank Stadium, initial games will be played either in Lancaster or other Atlantic League parks, until the new stadium is ready.
Start times for other games, a schedule of promotions and additional details of ticket plans will be announced at a later date. All games will be heard on News Radio 910 WSBA - the official broadcast home of York Revolution baseball.
