
Yard Goats Spoil Whoopie Pies on Friday Night

Portland, Maine - Tyreque Reed blasted two homers and drove in four runs as the Maine Whoopie Pies (24-31) lost 14-12 in an offensive showdown against the Hartford Yard Goats (36-19) on Friday at Hadlock Field.
The Whoopie Pies brought in four runs in the bottom of the first against Yard Goats starter Karl Kauffman. Ceddanne Rafaela and Pedro Castellanos singled with one out. Tyreque Reed cleared the bases with a three-run homer to right, giving Maine the 3-0 lead. The Whoopie Pies added another run on an RBI base hit from Tyler Dearden, expanding the lead to 4-0.
Hartford came rumbling back in the top of the second inning against Maine starter Kyle Hart. Jimmy Herron had an RBI singled and Hunter Stovall collected a run-scoring double to make it 2-4. Issac Collins and Ezequiel Tovar added three more runs later in the inning, giving the Yard Goats the lead 5-4.
Two runs came around for the Whoopie Pies in the bottom of the second. Rafaela hit a solo homer to center, while Reed added his second homer of the night, regaining the lead 6-5. It didn't last long as the Yard Goats tied the game in the top of the third with a solo homer from Daniel Montano, 6-6.
The Yard Goats plated seven runs in the top of the fourth inning, headlined by back-to-back homers by Aaron Schunk and Michael Toglia, taking the lead 13-6. The Whoopie Pies responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, Rafela led off with a double and Christian Koss drove him in with a base hit, making it a 13-7 game.
The Whoopie Pies continued to fight back in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Hudson Potts and Koss both walked. Tyler Dearden stepped up the plate and lined a ball over the wall in right, bringing the Whoopie Pies within three runs, 13-10. Hartford earned one run back on a solo homer by Willie McIver, bringing the score to 14-10.
Both teams went scoreless until the Whoopie Pies came up in the bottom of the ninth inning. Dearden led off the inning with a single and one out later Elih Marrero launched a home run into the bullpen in right, making it 14-12. Maine couldn't get any offense going afterward, falling to the Yard Goats 14-12.
Fineas Del Bonta-Smith (2-0, 4.02 ERA) tossed 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two, and picked up his second win of the season. Dylan Spacke (1-3, 4.45 ERA) picked his third loss while surrendering eight runs on six hits, walking two, and striking out three.
The Sea Dogs and Yard Goats play the penultimate game of a six-game series on Saturday with a 6:00 PM first pitch. Portland sends RHP Victor Santos (5-4, 3.94 ERA) to the mound against RHP Mitch Kilkenny (1-5, 8.13 ERA).
