Clearwater Threshers News Release
TAMPA-- The Clearwater Threshers held a lead for 6.2 innings Monday night, but lost their ninth consecutive game 6-5 on a walk-off to the Tampa Yankees.
Cody Grice came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and the game tied at five. On a 1-1 pitch from Threshers' reliever Jordan Guth, Grice lined a single to right field that scored Dante Bichette Jr. for the deciding run.
Grice, who came into the game 0-for-10 in three games, finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBI's. Bichette Jr. had a strong game as well. The Orlando native went 2-for-2 with two RBI's, runs scored, and two walks.
Ethan Stewart got the start for the Threshers (1-10) but didn't factor in the decision. Stewart threw five innings and allowed three runs - two earned - while walking six and striking out three.
Stewart was opposed by Brett Gerritse, who was starting a game for the first time this season. Gerritse also went five innings, surrendering 13 hits and five runs, with four earned. He struck out four and walked one.
Evan Rutckyj (1-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Guth (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three hits and an earned run. Guth struck out the first man he faced, but allowed the next four hitters to reach base.
Brian Pointer was in the leadoff spot for the first time this season and went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
Pointer started the scoring for the Threshers after opening the game with a triple to right center. He scored on a Pete Lavin RBI groundout.
Lavin reached on an error and later scored on a two out RBI single by Art Charles. Charles finished the night 3-for-3 with three singles and two RBI's.
Clearwater was leading until the bottom of the seventh inning. With the score 5-3, Chris Burgess came on in relief of Lino Martinez and allowed a two out, two-run single to Grice that tied the game.
The Threshers racked up 15 hits in the game, which is a new season high. 13 of those hits came in the first five innings, with only two coming over the final four.
Clearwater's struggles with runners in scoring position continued in game one versus the Yankees. The Threshers finished 3-for-12 with runners at second or third.
The series resumes Tuesday night from George M. Steinbrenner Field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Jon Prosinski will be opposed by Eric Wooten in a rematch of last Thursday's 7-3 Tampa victory over Clearwater. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on threshersbaseball.com.
