Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - Kyle Helisek turned in another solid outing on the mound, but the Palm Beach Cardinals couldn't overcome multiple defensive miscues, falling to the Bradenton Marauders 5-2 on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals (6-5) have lost three of their last four games.
Helisek, who allowed just one hit in six shutout innings in his first start of the season on April 8, was just as impressive on the hill for the Cardinals on Monday night. The southpaw scattered five hits in 6.2 innings and was charged with three runs - one earned - in the loss. He notched five strikeouts, including a stretch of four straight in the second and third innings, while keeping the Marauders off the board for the first four frames.
The Marauders (6-5) scored two of their three runs against Helisek on a pair of two-out, Cardinal errors. David Washington couldn't haul in a Breyvic Valera throw from third base in the fifth inning, allowing the Marauders to score their first run.
Jose Osuna drove in a run for Bradenton in the sixth and a Jesus Montero throwing error in the seventh gave the Marauders a 3-1 lead.
Valera and Charlie Tilson stayed hot at the plate for the Cardinals. Valera connected for a first-inning single to extend his hitting streak to a league-best 11 games. The infielder has recorded a hit in every game this season. Valera scored the team's first run in the inning and drove in another run in the seventh to trim the score to 3-2. He is batting .391 (18-for-46) with six RBI this year.
Tilson also claimed two hits on the night to extend his hitting streak to nine games - the second best mark in the Florida State League this season.
Dixon Llorens relieved Helisek in the seventh inning and finished the game for the Cardinals. He allowed two runs on one hit and a walk, struck out four and surrendered a run on a balk.
Bryton Trepagnier (1-0) earned the win out of the Bradenton bullpen and Tyler Waldron notched his first save of the season after two scoreless innings to end the game. Starter Chad Kuhl allowed one run on five hits in 4.2 innings, walked one and fanned five for the Marauders.
Jacob Wilson drove in Valera in the first inning on a two-out double as part of his two-hit night for Palm Beach.
The Cardinals and Marauders will play game two of the three-game set on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. LH Marco Gonzales (1-0, 0.00) will start for Palm Beach and RH Pat Ludwig (0-0, 1.29) will get the ball for Bradenton. The game will be broadcast live on www.palmbeachcardinals.com.
