Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA - The Tampa Yankees (13-17) took down the Daytona Cubs (13-17) in six innings, 8-3. The Yankees and Cubs endured a 48 minute rain delay in the bottom of the first inning, but the heavens opened up once again after the sixth inning and the umpires called it due to rain.
The Cubs and Yankees scored five runs before the first rain delay.
Tampa scored their two runs in the top of the first on a two-run home run by left fielder Eric Fryer. Center fielder Austin Krum singled up the middle to get aboard for Fryer. The home run was Fryer's first of the season.
Daytona took the lead back with three runs off of Dellin Betances before the tarp was put on the field for the first time. Nathan Samson led the inning off with a single and Jake Opitz followed with a walk. Right fielder Dylan Johnston then singled to right field to bring in Samson. First baseman Jovan Rosa followed with an RBI single of his own. Ryan Keedy then made his first at bat as a Daytona Cub a memorable one as he shot one into right field to score Johnston and give the Cubs the lead.
The lead did not last long as Tampa scored two runs in the third to take the lead and one more in the fourth to make it a 5-3 Yankees advantage.
Ronny Marte (1-0) shut down the Cubs hitters over the next couple innings to take the win for Tampa. James Leverton (2-3) worked just three innings, surrendered four runs and took the loss.
Tampa tacked on three runs in the sixth off Cubs reliever Steve Vento. It was Vento's first appearance since being placed on the disable list with a calf strain.
The game was called shortly after ten o'clock and lasted over three hours with a combined one hour and eighteen minutes of rain delay.
The Cubs and Yankees return to action for game two of the series on Tuesday night. First pitch is slated for 7:05. The Cubs will have Baseball Bingo presented by Steve Sumner and it is also the second Silver Sluggers' Night at "The Jack."
