Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Jesus Montero went 2-3 with a homerun and three runs scored and Zach McAllister tossed seven strong innings as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees rolled to an 8-4 victory over the Rochester Red Wings Sunday night at PNC Field.
The Yankees got on the board early, putting together a two-out rally in the first inning.
Eduardo Nunez started the rally with a single and moved to second after Montero drew a walk off Rochester starter Anthony Swarzak. P.J. Pilittere then drove Nunez on his first of three singles on the night.
In addition to the three hits, Pilittere walked and reached on an error, putting him on the base paths five times before the game was over.
Rochester responded quickly, scoring its first run of the game in the second inning.
Brock Peterson led off the inning with a single and, with one out, scored on a Jose Morales double over the head of Reid Gorecki in centerfield-one of only two hard hit balls off McAllister in the game.
The Yankees took the lead back with authority in the third inning, scoring three runs.
Nunez again started the rally with a lead-off walk. Montero and Pilittere then lined back-to-back singles, with Pilittere's driving home Nunez and putting the Yankees up 2-1.
After Reegie Corona walked, Eric Bruntlett lined a double into the gap in right center to score two runs and put the Yankees up 4-1.
Bruntlett finished the game 3-5 with three RBIs. After a dreadful start with the team, the super utility man is now batting .350 over his last five games (7-20), scoring four runs and driving in four more over the span.
The Red Wings managed to tie the game in the fourth inning on the other hard hit ball of McAllister-a two-out, three-run homerun on a 3-0 pitch to D'Angelo Jimenez.
"It was a 3-0 count and he wasn't afraid to take a hack at it," McAllister said. "It was a bad pitch on my part-just kind of left it up and down the middle."
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took the lead for good in the fourth inning on Montero's two-run homerun, which he muscled over the wall in left.
"I'm just trying to hit the ball hard every single time I'm out there and try to help the team win," Montero said. "It was a curveball pitch and I hit it out front. I'm using a big bat and I hit the ball really good on the barrel."
Montero-batting clean-up for only the sixth time this season-continued his resurgence at the plate, and is now hitting .342 over his last 10 games with three homeruns and eight RBIs.
The Yankees added two more runs in the sixth inning, giving McAllister some more insurance.
In total, the Yankees pounded out 13 hits in the game, and have now collected 26 hits over the past two game.
"It's always a nice feeling to know that you can go out there and you don't have to be worried about giving up one run," McAllister said. "Everyone in this clubhouse has the confidence that we're going to get wins."
The tall righty pitched seven innings for the second consecutive start en route to his sixth win of the year. McAllister allowed four runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out five.
"I felt good. I thought I did a good job mixing my curveball with my other pitches," McAllister said.
The Yankees close out their eight-game homestand Monday at 7:05 p.m. Glen Perkins will get the start for Rochester, while Dustin Moseley will take the mound for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
