Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Home runs by Eduardo Nunez and Jorge Vazquez helped the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees slug past the Rochester Red Wings 7-6 Monday night at PNC Field.

Kei Igawa started the game for the Yankees in place of Dustin Moseley, who was a late scratch from the lineup, and gave up two early runs to the Red Wings.

Jacques Jones put the first run on the board with two outs in the first inning on a solo home run to left-centerfield.

Rochester scored again in the second inning after Jose Morales lined a run scoring double over the head of centerfielder Reid Gorecki.

Igawa settled down after the first two innings and gave the Yankees a solid outing. The lefty went 5 2/3 innings of three-run ball, allowing four hits while walking three and striking out three more.

"He hadn't started a game in a while and he pitched well for us," Yankees manager Dave Miley said. "He left with the lead but we couldn't hold it."

Igawa had not started a game since May 27, when he went three innings and gave up three runs on seven hits against the Syracuse Chiefs.

"He went out and he got himself ready, we sent him out there and he gave us basically what we needed. You can't ask for more than that," Miley said.

The Yankees got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on Nunez's home run.

Justin Christian and Reid Gorecki started the inning with back-to-back singles before Nunez took a 2-1 pitch from Red Wing starter Glen Perkins over the right field wall for an opposite field home run.

It was Nunez's third home run of the season, and his first since May 17.

Rochester managed to tie the game in the sixth inning, when Brock Peterson scored on another Morales base hit off Zack Segovia.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre responded loudly in the bottom of the inning, when Vazquez gave the Yankees their second three-run home run of the ballgame.

With one out in the inning, Nunez and Jesus Montero worked walks, putting two on for Vazquez.

Vazquez then took the sixth pitch he saw from Perkins deep over the wall in left field for his third home run of the year, putting the Yankees up 6-3.

Vazquez has played in just 14 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but has driven in 10 runs with team.

Rochester came back to tie the game again in the eighth inning off Royce Ring, who was let down by defense.

Back-to-back errors with one out by Nunez on routine plays put runners at first and second. The Red Wings then reeled off three consecutive singles to tie the game at 6-6.

The Yankees would take the lead for good in the bottom of the inning.

With one out, Vazquez lined a double to the wall in right and moved to third on a wild pitch. The pitch was supposed to be the first ball on an intentional walk to Reegie Corona, but Rochester pitcher Rob Delaney threw the ball past the catcher to the backstop.

While attempting to deliver the second ball of the intentional walk, Delaney was called for a balk, allowing Vazquez to score the winning run.

Jonathan Albaladejo came in to close it out for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and struck out the side to pick up his 24th save of the year.

Albaladejo is now one save shy of tying the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre record for saves in a season.

With the victory, the Yankees finished off the four-game sweep of Rochester, outscoring the Red Wings 26-11 over the span. The 26 runs were the most that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has scored in a single series this season.

The team has also hit home runs in seven consecutive games, and in nine of its last 10.

As for why Moseley was scratched from the start, Miley simply said, "He's healthy."

The Yankees travel to Pawtucket Tuesday to begin a four-game series with the Red Sox. Tim Redding is scheduled to get the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Adam Mills will take the mound for Pawtucket.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
