This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) lost 16-5 to the Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees). The Cardinals fall to 18-31 with the loss as the Yankees improve to 19-31. Jordan Pals (0-1) took the loss for the Cardinals as Jeffrey Karstens (2-2) picked up the win for the Yankees.
Omar Pena led the Cardinals offensively with three hits on two singles and a double. Joe Mather and Kevin Estrada each had two hits on the night for the Cardinals. Mather also scored two runs in the game. Brendan Ryan had two RBI's for the Cardinals on a rbi-single and sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals allowed 24 hits on the night which is the most hits allowed in a single game in Cardinalshistory. The Yankees plated 8 runs in the first inning to take an early lead. On 6/29/98 at Lowell, the Cardinals allowed 12 runs in an inning. Though the Cardinals lost by 11 runs, the largest Cardinals loss in history was 19-0 at Jamestown on 7/17/00. The largest Cardinals win ever was a 22-9 victory over Auburn on 7/21/95.
Cardinals catcher Billy Schmitt pitched a perfect ninth inning. He joins Mark Dean (NJC 94), Tony Falciglia (NJC 96), Brandon Folkers (NJC 98) and Dallas Pollaro (NJC 00) as position players who have pitched for the New Jersey Cardinals.
The Cardinals travel to Staten Island tomorrow to face the Yankees at 12:15 p.m. Then the Cardinals have a three game series at Tri-City. The Cardinals return home on Tuesday, August 12th, against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at 7:15 p.m. The first 500 fans will receive Top Prospect Card Giveaway #5.
