BURLINGTON, VT --- Brian Rogers tossed six inning of four-hit shutout baseball and five different Tiger batters had two hits as Oneonta defeated the Vermont Expos 7-3 in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Centennial Field.
Rogers (1-1) scattered four singles over his six innings with one walk and six strikeouts for his first victory of the season for Stedler Division-leading Oneonta.
Oneonta scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Andrew Graham had an RBI single in the second off Expos starter Carlos Caceres and Garth McKinney hit a solo home run in the fourth, his fourth homer of the season.
The Tigers then broke the game open in the sixth when they scored four runs for a 7-0 advantage. Three of the four runs were unearned due to two Expos errors, while Eric Rodland had an RBI double and Kody Kirkland an RBI single.
The Expos got on the board in the seventh inning on Josh Whitesell's third solo home run of the season. Vermont added a pair of runs in the eighth on a two-run single from Salomon Manriquez.
Graham was 2-for-3 with two RBI in his first start with the Tigers, while Vince Blue was 2-for-3 with two walks. Kirkland, Rodland and Jake Ford also had two hits apiece for Oneonta (31-19).
Manriquez and Brad Ditter both had two hits for Vermont, while Carlos Caceres (0-2) allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits over five innings to take the loss for the Expos.
Vermont (10-40) has now five or more runs in 16 of its last 19 games, while also falling to 0-27 this season when the opponent has scored first in a game.
Jason Tuttle was 2-for-4 for the Expos to extend his current hitting streak to 18 games, tying Geoff Blum's club-record for consecutive-game hitting streak. Tuttle has gone 23-for-69 (.333) during his hitting streak and will try to set a new team record on Friday night when the Expos host Oneonta at 7:05 p.m.
Friday night with be Hannford's Night at the ballpark and there will be wiffleball bats for the first 1,000 fans through the turnstiles as Anthony Pearson takes to the mound for Vermont in the final game of the two-game series with Oneonta.
