Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (4-8) dropped its third straight game and fell a season high four games under .500 as the Rochester Red Wings (7-6) won their second straight over the Yankees at Frontier Field with a 4-2 win on Tuesday night.
Yankee lefty Mike O'Connor made his first start since 2009 in place of Manny Banuelos, who missed his regular turn in the rotation after getting placed on the disabled list following his most recent start last Thursday in Buffalo. The pitch count on O'Connor was expected to be in around 40 pitches instead, he tossed 3.2 innings of shutout baseball on 51 pitches and kept Scranton/Wilkes-Barre from having to go an overworked bullpen until later in the night.
Red Wings starter Daryl Thompson (WP, 1-2) matched O'Connor pitch for pitch as both pitchers took shutouts into the fourth inning. O'Connor ran out of pitches and with two down issued his second walk of night and second to Joe Benson. Chase Whitley (LP, 0-1) came into the game for the Yankees with two outs in the fourth inning and stranded the inherited runner from O'Connor and the game stayed 0-0.
Rochester opened the scoring in the fifth off Whitley, scoring twice for a 2-0 advantage picking up three infield hits in the inning. Brandon Laird appeared to roll an ankle on the first of three slowly hit infield singles. The ball chopped up the third base line by Aaron Bates was bare-handed by Laird who fell to the infield in obvious discomfort before getting up and limping off the field under his own power. Following singles from Ray Chang and Ben Revere that loaded the bases, a bloop single to left from Tsuyoshi Nishioka scored Bates for a 1-0 lead. Former Yankee Matt Carson got the second run of the inning home on a swinging bunt that rolled 40 feet up the line at third and died on the grass in fair territory for a 2-0 Red Wings lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got to Thompson in the bottom half of the inning when Ramiro Pena's double to right center field with two down scored Doug Bernier who worked a one out walk. The Yankees had the chance to turn a deficit into a tie if not for Revere whose sprawled out catch in the left field corner saved a run and kept the Red Wings lead at 2-1.
The Red Wings added some cushion in the top of the seventh inning adding a pair of runs, one charged to Whitley and the second to new Yankees pitcher Juan Cedeno. A lead off infield single by Drew Butera and a one out walk by Cedeno, to the first batter he faced, put runners at first and second for Brian Dozier who delivered a two RBI double into the left field corner to give the Wings a 4-1 lead.
Anthony Slamma came into the game in the eighth inning for the Red Wings and did not have an easy time closing out the Yankees who picked up one run in the eighth inning on Ray Kruml's RBI single that scored Francisco Cervelli to cut the lead to 4-2. Slamma allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth and the Yankees had runners at first and second with two down. A wild pitched moved the tying run into scoring position, but Slamma got Colin Curtis on a foul tip third strike to end the game.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester Red Wings continue their four game series Wednesday night at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York against the Red Wings with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Right hander D.J. Mitchell (0-1, 4.00 ERA) makes the start for the Yankees, while the Rochester will send right hander Cole DeVries (0-0, 3.12 ERA) to the mound.
