Yakima Bears News Release
Yakima WA---The Yakima Bears opened up a 5-0 lead and held on for a 5-3 win over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Tuesday at Yakima County Stadium. The unusual game featured 12 strikeouts, 11 walks, and one hit batter from the Yakima pitching staff, which allowed only three hits, and a Northwest League-record-tying six double plays by Salem-Keizer, including five of the 6-4-3 variety.
The Bears jumped on Salem-Keizer starter Joey Martinez (1-2) for two runs in the bottom of the first. After Martinez walked Ramon Downing, Chris Rahl doubled to the right-center-field gap. RBI singles from Derek Bruce and Trey Hendricks made it a 2-0 game. Bruce extended his hitting streak to six games, and both Bruce and Leyson Septimo have now reached base in 11 consecutive games. Hendricks reached base in his 12th consecutive game.
Catcher Manny Del Campo was 3-for-3 from the No. 8 spot in the Bear lineup, scoring twice. He singled with one out in the second and advanced to second on an infield single by Downing, then scored on a Rahl single. Del Campo then started a two-run rally in the fifth, singling ahead of a Septimo double. Del Campo scored on a wild pitch, and Downing singled down the right-field line after a 10-pitch at-bat to score Septimo and chase Martinez.
Yakima starter Angel Rocha (2-3), plagued by control problems all season, looked dominant at times in the middle innings in his best start of the season. Salem-Keizer pulled one run back in the fifth inning after Adalberto Paulino struck out but reached on a wild pitch to open the inning. After a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, Will Thompson singled to right field to score Paulino. But Rahl threw out Anthony Contreras trying to score, one of two outfield assists on the night for Rahl. Rocha pitched six innings and had a season-high eight strikeouts.
The Volcanoes got two more runs in the seventh without the benefit of a hit. Relievers John Cahill and Ryan Schreppel combined to walk three batters and throw a wild pitch, making the score 5-3. Matt Fowles got through the eighth inning for Yakima despite two more walks, and closer Chris Thompson, newly arrived from Lancaster to replace Matty Wilkinson, walked the leadoff man before retiring three straight hitters in the ninth inning to earn the save.
Salem-Keizer's six double plays tied a Northwest League record set by Bend in 1987. Five of Yakima's eight at-bats ended with double plays started by Contreras, and Thompson added an unassisted double play. Yakima turned two double plays of its own and tied the five game series at two games apiece.
The season series between the teams concludes tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
