
X's find offense and defense in veteran first baseman

Sioux City, IA: The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have signed veteran infielder Dan Meier. The Explorers acquired Meier's rights from the Jackson Senators of the Central League on February 2nd in exchange for the contractual rights to INF Luis Espinosa.
"Managers in the Central League told me he was the best fielding first baseman in the league the past two years," comments manager Steve Shirley. "He is also coming off one of the top offensive seasons of his career. He finished in the top five in five major statistical categories. From everything I have heard, Dan will be one our top players this season."
Meier, 27, enters his third season in independent baseball and first in the Northern League. The Aurora, CO resident had a stellar season in 2004 with with Amarillo of the Central League. In the league, Meier finished 2nd in average (.340), 3rd in hits (117), 5th in doubles (24), 2nd in on-base percentage (.445), and 2nd in runs scored (76). He also led all first baseman in the league in games played (87), put-outs (834), total chances (886), assists (46), double plays (85), and fielding percentage (.993).
The Arizona State graduate was originally drafted in the 14th round of the 1998 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Meier played in the D-Backs organization until being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in June of 2000. He played with the Pirates (A) and (AA) affiliates until the end of the 2002 season. In 2003, Dan started his independent career with Amarillo where he played two full seasons with the Dillas and will continue this season with the X's.
