FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have re-signed 3B Ruben Salazar to a contract for the 2005 season, the Northern League club announced today. Salazar is returning to the RedHawks for his third season.

Salazar, 27, hit .314 with 10 doubles, three home runs, 29 RBIs and 25 runs scored in 41 games in 2004. He missed the final 55 games of the season after breaking a bone in his hand. Salazar healed up in time to play winter ball for the Aragua Tigers this year, where he batted .273 with five doubles, nine home runs, 48 RBIs and 23 runs scored in 52 games. He finished second in the Venezuelan Winter League in RBIs.

Salazar originally joined the RedHawks for the 2003 season and helped lead the RedHawks to the league championship. He batted .292 with 19 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 49 RBIs and 64 runs scored. A career .303 hitters, Salazar spent his first six seasons in professional baseball with the Minnesota Twins organization.

"Ruben was another priority signing for our club this offseason," said RedHawks manager Doug Simunic. "He is a proven offensive threat in the Northern League and gives us a top-level third baseman, as well."

REDHAWKS NEWS...

· RedHawks CF Joe Mathis recently returned to Fargo after playing in the Colombian Winter League. Mathis played for the Toros de Sucre, where he batted .293 with 13 doubles, three home runs, 16 RBIs and 25 runs scored in 30 games. He helped the Toros to a second place finish and was a finalist for the league's MVP award. Mathis and RedHawks RHP/INF Derek Dormanen are serving as assistant coaches at Concordia College in Moorhead this spring under head coach Bucky Burgau.

· RedHawks pitching coach Steve Montgomery is the new pitching coach for North Dakota State University. The Bison open their first NCAA Division I season on Friday against Utah Valley State at Colorado Springs, CO.
