Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have re-signed RHP Mathew Kretzschmar for the upcoming season. Kretzschmar was a key mid-season acquisition by field manager, Les Lancaster and will join closer Brett Reid as the first two pitchers inked to 2009 contracts.
Kretzschmar made his first appearance for the X's on June 14th, 2008 and in 42.1 innings of work, Mat posted a 4 - 1 record with an astonishing 1.28 ERA out of the bullpen for the X's. In only 24 games, he struck out 40 batters and only allowed 12 walks, while holding opposing hitters to a minuscule.171 batting average against.
"Kretzschmar has an outstanding arm and was a very solid pitcher for us last season out of the bull pen," comments manager Les Lancaster. "When spring training opens this season, Mat is going to get a chance to earn a spot in the starting rotation."
Prior to Kretzschmar's arrival in Sioux City this past season, he spent the previous three seasons (2005-2007) with the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
The 2009 season will mark Mat's 5th season in professional baseball and 1st full season as a member of the Sioux City Explorers. Kretzschmar was born in Long Beach, CA and currently resides in Phoenix, AZ.
