Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - With Spring Training almost 3 months away, the Sioux City Explorers are beginning to re-sign a small core of players from the 2012 squad. Today, they have announced the signing of outfielder, Peter Barrows. The 2013 season will mark Barrows second year in Sioux City and third overall in professional baseball.
Joining the team in late June, after the team was in need of an outfielder with Michael Lang signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Barrows stepped right in and had a huge impact offensively for the squad. In 61 games, the 25-year-old hit .284 with 11 home runs, 18 doubles and four triples. With 67 hits, he drove in 48 runs, while also crossing the plate 34 times. He was second on the team in home runs and triples, playing in nearly 30 fewer games.
"We are excited to have the young power hitter back for 2013," commented X's Field Manager, Stan Cliburn. "He brings the long ball into our game as a consistent threat."
Prior to joining the X's, the Old Saybrook, CT native played closer to home in the Atlantic League for the Bridgeport Bluefish. He played in 12 games for the "ËFish, hitting .286 in 44 plate appearances. In 2011, Barrows' first year of professional baseball, he split time between two Central Division rivals the Kansas City T-Bones and Wichita Wingnuts. Combined he appeared in 42 games, hitting .288 with three home runs, three triples and eight doubles. As a rookie, Barrows was also patient at the plate drawing an on-base percentage of .370.
Defensively, Barrows has played a majority of his professional career in the outfield. Over his two rookie seasons, the right-hander has a .967 fielding percentage in 100 games from the outfield. He compiled 195 putouts, seven assists and two double plays, while only producing seven errors.
In other news, the Sioux City Explorers have also announced today the releasing of veteran INF Ryan Priddy, veteran catcher Ray Serrano and RHP Nick Schumacher.
"Releasing these three players was hard, as they all became fan favorites and staples in the community," stated Cliburn. "Going 45-55 last season is not acceptable and changes needed to be made. We are looking to keep a small core of players from 2012 and with the help from Nick (Belmonte), build a more competitive squad for 2013."
The Sioux City Explorers will kick off their 21st season on Saturday, May 4th when players report for Spring Training. The 2013 Home Opener will be Thursday, May 16th versus the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants.
