Xplorers Prep For Training Camp, Camp To be Held In DCC Parking Lot

SOUTHAVEN, Miss – The Memphis Xplorers are gearing up for the start of their 2003 af2 training camp next week. This year the Xplorers will become the first af2 team to hold practice outside, setting up a full turf field complete with walls on one half, in the southwest parking lot of the DeSoto Civic Center. "This is great to have the training camp right there in the parking lot," said head coach Danton Barto. "To be able to lay down the actual game field right there with the walls and practice under the lights will be a real boost. No one else in af2 has ever done this and we are excited to be the first."

The Xplorers will begin training camp on Tuesday, March 18th, with players reporting for physicals, followed by the first day of practice on Wednesday, March 19th at 8:15 p.m.

"We feel we have assembled a very talented team, obviously more talented than last year's squad," Barto said. "I can't wait to get underway with this group. The chance to mesh with this unit and to help everyone understand their roles is very exciting to me as a coach."

All training camp sessions are open to the public and the media.

The Xplorers will start the season on the road with a trip to Columbus, GA. to battle the Wardogs on April 5th. The Xplorers open up the home campaign at the DeSoto Civic Center on Saturday, April 12th, against the Bakersfield Blitz. Opening night features the opportunity to win three cars.

FIELD PUT DOWN

The astro turf field is scheduled to be placed down in the southwest corner parking lot of the DCC tomorrow weather permitting. The process will take several hours, the field will not be laid out if it rains.
