Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS- The Memphis Xplorers of af2, coming off their best season in team history, were seen by more people than any previous Xplorers squad this past year.
The Xplorers, who play their home games at the DeSoto Civic Center, saw their attendance improve 21 percent from the previous year's total. That increase marks a significant rise in the league-wide attendance average. The af2 league office announced earlier this week that all teams combined to show a 12 percent increase.
The Xplorers averaged 3,521 fans per game this season, up from last year's average of 2,781.
Perhaps even more impressively, the Xplorers revenue from ticket sales jumped an astonishing 124 percent from last year's totals.
The Xplorers also set a franchise record for single-game attendance in their final home game of the season. The crowd of 6,286 that saw Memphis defeat Macon eclipsed the previous high that was set in the 2002 season.
Xplorers general manager Nate Yoder feels that the attendance increases are a trend that will continue into future years.
"I think that we've put this team on the map, both in terms of on-field play and general entertainment value," said Yoder. "I'm gratified that so many people came out to watch some excellent football in the final game of the year, and I'm positive that we'll see more and more fans doing that from now on."
The Memphis Xplorers finished the 2004 season with a 10-7 record, including a close loss in the first round of the af2 playoffs to the Florida Firecats. Head Coach Danton Barto will be spending the off-season scouting for talent, as the Xplorers look to return to the playoffs in 2005.
