Jay Marcus steps down as executive director of af2
August 11, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - JAY MARCUS, currently in his third season as executive director of arenafootball2 (af2), is stepping down at the conclusion of the 2004 season, AFL Commissioner DAVID BAKER announced today.
"I truly enjoyed working with the AFL family," said Marcus. "I want to thank the AFL Board of Directors, the af2 operators and especially Commissioner Baker for providing me the opportunity to be a part of the best family in sports. I'm proud of my accomplishments at af2, but now I look forward to pursuing other career opportunities."
During his tenure, Marcus marketed, sold and developed 18 expansion teams, increased national sponsorships and licensees, and celebrated the league's one millionth and five millionth fans. His invaluable contributions leave af2 well positioned for future growth. So far in 2004, af2 attendance is up 12 percent, and 25 percent of this year's AFL rosters were filled with former af2 players.
"Under Jay's leadership, af2 truly reached its objective as a developmental league for higher levels of professional football," said Baker. "More importantly, Jay is a believer in what the AFL and af2 are trying to do. His commitment will be missed."
Marcus joined the AFL in July of 2000 as the AFL's assistant general counsel. He was promoted to executive director of af2 in August of 2001.
Marcus, Baker and JERRY KURZ, the AFL's vice president of international development, a league founder and member of Gridiron Enterprises, are working on a transition strategy designed to provide new af2 leadership.
