
Wynne Joins Confederations Cup Squad

Toronto FC announced Monday that defender Marvell Wynne has been named to the 23 man U.S. roster that will compete at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa. Wynne is currently with the U.S. team that played two FIFA 2010 World Cup Qualifiers over the last week and will travel straight to South Africa with the rest of the team today. The tournament will take place from June 14-28.
The FIFA Confederations Cup is made up of the six champions of each regional confederation, the defending World Cup Champions, and the host nation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The U.S. begins their campaign against defending World Cup Champions Italy on June 15 at Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane/Pretoria, and then faces Brazil on June 18 in the same venue. The Americans wrap up group play on June 21 against Egypt at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.
The U.S. qualified for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup by winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2007.
Wynne will return to Toronto after his duties with the U.S National Team. The earliest he would be available for selection could be Wednesday, June 24 when Toronto FC hosts the New York Red Bulls.
