LEADING OFF: West Virginia shutout Kannapolis 4-0 in game one of the series Friday night. The Power jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by Jordan George and run scoring single from Logan Ratledge. The club added another run in the third, and capped the scoring in the sixth when Daniel Arribas drove in Carlos Munoz with an RBI single. That lead would prove plenty for starter Mitch Keller, who allowed just two hits across seven shutout innings. Jess Amedee worked two scoreless innings of relief to preserve the 4-0 victory and twelfth shutout win of the season.
THE FINAL FRONTIER: West Virginia makes its first and only trip to Intimidators Stadium for a four game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators. Prior to this series, Kannapolis was the only South Atlantic League city the Power had not visited in 2016. West Virginia took two out of three from Kannapolis in their only other series April 18-20 at Appalachian Power Park. The Power lead the overall series 66-60.
CHECK THE RECORDS: After another five strikeouts Friday night, Mitch Keller is at 124 punch outs for the season, tying him for the third highest single-season mark in West Virginia Power history. Tyler Glasnow holds the record after he fanned 164 in 2013 and Will Inman is second with his 134 strikeouts in 2006. Keller's 2.54 ERA would be the fourth best mark in team history, trailing Inman (1.71), Yeudy Garcia (2.10) and Stephen Tarpley (.248).
SHUTOUT SHOW: Friday's 4-0 victory was the Power's twelfth shutout win this season, tying them with August and Delmarva for the second most clean sheets in the league. Charleston fifteen shutouts is the high mark in the SAL. Mitch Keller has now thrown 18 consecutive scoreless innings over his last three starts.
TWO HIT WONDER: The two hits allowed by the Power in the series opener matched the lowest amount of hits allowed by Power pitchers in a game this season. Both Mitch Keller and Jess Amedee contributed to Friday's two-hitter, as well as the first time the feat was accomplished July 14 vs. Augusta, when Keller, Amedee and Cesilio Pimentel combined for the 2-0, two hit shutout.
MITCHELL MAGIC: With his third innings single, Mitchell Tolman extended his current hitting streak to ten games, the longest current streak on the Power roster. The second baseman is batting .457 with one home run and five RBI. Tolman also owns a 14 game on-base streak which also the longest such streak on West Virginia.
TOPPING IT OFF: Casey Hughston's became the first Power player to hit a leadoff home run in consecutive games, after opening games one and two of the Lexington series with blasts over the right field wall. Tito Polo was the last Power player to hit a leadoff home run after he went yard in the first inning on May 5 at Charleston.
POWER POINTS: The 12 runs allowed by Power pitchers in game one Thursday was the second most allowed by the team this season... The top five batters in Tuesday's Power lineup combined for 15 hits over 25 at bats... Sean Keselica struck out seven of the nine batters he faced over two and two-thirds innings on Tuesday night. The lefty's K/9 ratio is 9.78 and ranks just outside the top five in the South Atlantic League among relievers.. The Power are 57-16 when they score three runs or more and 4-45 when they plate two or less.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Miami snuck past Pittsburgh 6-5. The Marlins scored the go-ahead run in the ninth against Neftali Feliz... Indianapolis came back to beat Louisville 8-7. Max Moroff and Austin Meadows each homered in the win... New Hampshire blew out Altoona 12-2. Brandon Waddell fell to 7-8 after allowing five runs in six and a third frames... Bradenton's game with Palm Beach was postponed due to inclement weather... The Black Bears overcame Vermont 5-2.
PROMO UPDATE: On Saturday, August 27, the first 1,000 fans at Appalachian Power Park will receive a Tyler Glasnow and Josh Bell bobblehead, presented by IHOP. The game also features an appearance by the Pirate Parrot and a Mystery Ball sale to help raise money for Pirates Charities.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN Radio 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App.
