WRVA's Barrett Tabbed As New "Voice Of The Diamond"
March 2, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, have announced that popular area radio host Jimmy Barrett has been named "The Voice of The Diamond," and will serve as the primary public address announcer for the Flying Squirrels during their inaugural 2010 season in Richmond.
Barrett has lived in Richmond since 2001 and hosts "Richmond's Morning News with Jimmy Barrett" weekdays from 5 am - 9 am on Clear Channel Richmond station WRVA 1140 AM. Prior to moving to Virginia, he hosted many radio programs in his native Michigan, and also served as the public address announcer for the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium from 1991-1999. His resume also includes public address duties for University of Michigan men's basketball during the same time period.
"When Jimmy originally expressed interest in the position, I was elated," said Flying Squirrels' Director of Broadcasting Jon Laaser. "To have someone who is not only widely-popular in the area, but also has a Major League background and sound, is a great luxury for our franchise as we grow our identity."
Barrett, who also holds the title of program director at WRVA, will handle nearly the entire slate of Flying Squirrels games during the 2010 season. Michael Clifford, program director for Sports Radio 910 AM, will be behind the microphone for the remaining games on the 2010 schedule. The pairing continues to grow the partnership formed between the Flying Squirrels and Clear Channel Richmond. Sports Radio 910 AM will also serve the radio flagship station for Flying Squirrels baseball, with games streamed live on-line at SportsRadio910.com.
"Baseball and the ballpark atmosphere is something I grew up on," said Barrett. "I can't think of a better way to spend my spring and summer evenings than adding a small part to the family entertainment the Flying Squirrels are committed to!"
