Wichita Wranglers News Release
Ray Winder Field, Little Rock, AR - Wichita RHP Kyle Middleton (1-2) allowed one run on five hits over six innings to lead the Wranglers (6-7) to a 3-2 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (8-5), ending the Travs three-game winning streak. The Travs put the tying and winning runs on base in the ninth, but LHP Billy Keppinger retired Alberto Callaspo and Tommy Murphy to earn his first save. Travs LHP Tim Bittner (2-1) pitched well, but suffered his first loss as an Angels farmhand. Bittner, who retired 15 of 16 batters at one point, struck out eight and allowed two runs on three hits in six innings. Arkansas RF Nick Gorneault knocked in both Travs' runs with an RBI single and a solo home run (1). The Travs stranded nine runners, six in scoring position.
The game was scoreless after five innings, but Wichita CF Mel Stocker worked a walk to start the sixth. 2B Ruben Gotay followed with a double past third base to score Stocker for a 1-0 Wichita lead. Wranglers RF Brandon Berger knocked Gotay home for a 2-0 lead with a double off the left-field wall.
Arkansas C Jeff Mathis doubled to left field with two outs in the sixth inning. Gorneault followed with a single to left to cut the Wranglers lead to 2-1.
Travs RHP Cliff Smith replaced Bittner in the seventh and allowed a two-out solo home run to Chad Santos (1).
Wichita had RHP Jorge Vasquez come on for the ninth, and Gorneault blasted his first pitch way over the center field wall for a solo shot and a 3-2 Wichita lead. Vasquez then retired Mike Eylward, but 2B Casey Smith and PH Jason Aspito singled with one out chasing Vasquez. Keppinger came on to retire Callaspo and Murphy to end the game.
The Travs record against Wichita drops to 6-3.
The game was played in 2:34 and the paid attendance was 2,306.
The series finale is set for Wednesday night with RHP Mike Brunet (1-1) taking the hill for Arkansas against RHP Junior Herndon (1-1). The first pitch is set for 7:10 and the gates at Ray Winder Field open at 6:10 p.m.
