Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(WICHITA, Kansas) - The Wichita Wranglers scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to take game two of the Texas League Championship Series. The Wranglers 2-1 victory dealt the Hooks' their first playoff loss.
Hooks' reliever Paul Estrada entered the game in the ninth to preserve the 1-1 tie. Estrada loaded the bases with two outs giving up two hits and walking a batter. Wranglers' lead off man Chris Lubanski then singled to right field driving in Angel Sanchez from third for the game winning run.
Both starters had solid outing for the respected ball clubs in their first playoff appearance. Hooks' starter Ronnie Martinez worked 4.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and five walks. Martinez also struck out three in the game. Wranglers' starter Billy Buckner tossed seven innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out eight. Neither Martinez nor Buckner got a decision in the game.
The Hooks scored their lone run in the top of the sixth, a half inning after Wichita put up their first run. Osvaldo Fernando led off the inning with a single into left field. Fernando advanced to second on a Josh Anderson single up the middle. Tike Redman followed with a sacrifice bunt and still reached first on the play loading the bases for Hunter Pence. Pence grounded into a fielders' choice allowing Fernando to score and tie the game 1-1. Buckner settled down and struck out the next two batters of the inning to end the Hooks' threat.
Estrada (0-1) suffered the loss for the Hooks while Gabe DeHoyos (2-0) picked up the win for the Wranglers tossing two innings of shutout relief.
The Hooks return to Whataburger Field on Thursday for the final three games of the Texas League Championship. RHP Chance Douglass (1-0, 4.50) will toe the slab for the Hooks in the third game of the series, while the Wranglers counter with RHP Luke Hochevar (1-0, 3.38). The first 5,000 fans through the gates with a paid admission will receive a Texas League Championship Rally Towel, courtesy of Whataburger and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
