Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER, MA--- The Tornadoes took game three of the first series with Brockton this evening 5-1 on the strength of a pair of solo homers from catcher Alex Trezza and shortstop Garrett Olson.
Worcester started early with a lead-off double from Vinny Pennell, and after a wild pitch from Freddy Flores (0-1) he scored on a Garrett Olson ground ball to the right side for the first run. Two batters later, Trezza's solo shot became the go ahead and eventual game winning run.
Matt Weagle (1-2) in his first start since coming off the injured list hemmed and hawed his was through five innings with a strike out and a walk to pick up his first victory of 2009, and his first in his dual role as player-coach. Flores went one inning more than Weagle before bowing to another pitcher who was recently activated, James Baker (0-0). Baker coughed up two more earned runs before handing it over to lefty Brad Hertzler (1-2). Worcester's Chris Anderson (1-0) and Albert Ayala (0-0) continued the trend of stellar bullpen work, pitching four innings and giving up only a solo homer to DH Palmer Karr.
The Tornadoes head back to Little Falls, NJ tomorrow morning for four games in five days against the first place New Jersey Jackals, who took two of two in a rain shortened series least weekend. Game one at 5:05 will feature newly acquired right-hander Chris Farley (0-0) for Worcester against the left-handed ace Isaac Pavlik (3-1). WTAG will pick up game one at 6pm. For game two at 7:05pm the Tornadoes will match RHP Josef Frias (0-0) against LHP Giuseppe Granitto (0-0).
