Worcester Bravehearts News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester Bravehearts (35-18) defeated the Martha's Vineyard Sharks (21-34) on Friday night by a final score of 13-3. Worcester showed the disparity between the top and bottom of the futures league in their win. The Bravehearts jumped out to an early lead against Sharks' starter Jorge Castro (Lenoir Community College/Yonkers, NY). They scored four runs in the first inning, but all were considered unearned due to an error that allowed Austin Lonestar (Saint Mary's/Danville, CA) to reach base and extend the inning. Lonestar scored four runs in the game after recording one hit in three at-bats with two walks. Worcester's lead was extended to 5-0 leading into the fifth inning when the Sharks finally got on the scoreboard. Martha's Vineyard scored their three runs in the fifth and six innings against Bravehearts' pitchers Brady Furdon (Wheaton College/Natick, MA) and Peter Bovenzi (Richmond/Lunenburg, MA). Furdon started on the mound for Worcester and pitched 4.2 innings. He allowed just two runs on seven hits to go with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. With only a 5-3 lead, Worcester added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Then, they piled on six more insurance runs in the eighth to cement their 13-3 victory. The six runs came courtesy of multi RBI at-bats from Rafael Bournigal (Belmont/Mulberry, FL) and Greg Kocinski (Marist/Belle Mead, NJ). Bournigal ended the day with two runs and three RBIs on one hit in four at-bats with a walk. Kocinski registered two hits of his own along with five RBIs plus a run and walk in just four at-bats. Pat McGowan (Holy Cross/Wellesley, MA) earned the win for the Bravehearts after 1.2 innings of relief work pitched with four strikeouts and no runs allowed. The Worcester Bravehearts' next game is on the road in Martha's Vineyard against the same Sharks at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6th. The team will return home on Tuesday, August 9th in Worcester at 7:05 p.m. for a playoff contest against a team that will be determined on Sunday night.
