Myrtle Beach, SC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (37-44, 6-10) entered the seventh inning without a hit against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (55-28, 8-9) Wednesday night at Pelicans Ballpark. They left the inning with four of them and a two-run lead.

A three-run seventh inning coupled with another impressive collective pitching effort was enough for the Woodpeckers to take down Myrtle Beach, 3-1 final. Fayetteville has won each of the first two games of the six-game series and five consecutive games against the Pelicans going back to 2021.

The two teams were locked into a pitcher's duel early on. In his 2022 debut, Woodpeckers starting pitcher Valente Bellozo went four scoreless innings, surrendering just a pair of hits and a pair of walks. The righty was pitching in his first game since August 27, 2019, nearly three years ago. On the other side, Myrtle Beach's Luke Little shut down Fayetteville over three innings before Gregori Montano followed with four more clean outs recorded.

Miguel Ullola (W, 1-0) came in for Bellozo ahead of the fifth inning and promptly struck out the side in order. In the sixth, Ullola surrendered the first run of the ballgame on a solo home run from Kevin Made. It was Made's ninth homer of the season and just the second allowed by Ullola this season.

The Woodpeckers needed some offense in the top of the seventh and they got it from Cody Orr. After entering the ballgame as a defensive replacement for Victor Mascai the previous frame, Orr squared up a pitch from Jose Miguel Gonzalez (L, 6-2) and launched it over the bleachers in left for his second home run of 2022, tying the game at one. It was the first base hit of the game for Fayetteville.

The next batter was Tyler Whitaker, who reached on an infield single then stole second base. A wild pitch by Gonzalez moved Whitaker to third before Leosdany Molina grounded one off of Made's glove at short and into left field to give the Woodpeckers a 2-1 edge. Molina would end up being caught stealing but later in the inning, Jaxon Hallmark lined one over the left field fence for his first career professional home run to double the lead.

Those three runs were enough for Ullola, who surrendered a pair of hits the rest of the way but held the Pelicans scoreless en route to the first Single-A win of his career.

Fayetteville will try to secure a series split at worst Thursday night in Myrtle Beach. RHP Deylen Miley takes the ball for the Woodpeckers while RHP Richard Gallardo aims to stop the slide for the Pelicans. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 ET.
