Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds nearly pulled off an improbable comeback from a five-run deficit only to see the Carolina Mudcats rally in the last of the ninth as the Shorebirds fell 7-6 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
Had the Shorebirds (27-56, 6-12) held on, it would have marked their largest comeback win of the season, instead the Mudcats (42-42, 8-10) managed to rally for their second straight win.
The Mudcats scored early and often in the first. Jeferson Quero drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Jackson Chourio ripped an RBI single. Oswal Leones capped the first inning with a two-run homer, his second of the season.
Carolina tacked on another in the second on a Hendry Mendez RBI groundout.
Delmarva ate into the deficit one run at a time in the third and fifth innings, with Luis Valdez providing an RBI single on each occasion.
After back-to-back singles to start the seventh, Wilkin Grullon blasted a three-run homer to left, his second homer of the year, to tie the game at 5-5. Valdez then singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. After a walk, a groundball double play allowed Valdez to score giving Delmarva a 6-5 lead.
The Mudcats made their move in the ninth with one away. Jose Sibirian walked before Jackson Chourio singled him to third. A fielder's choice scored Sibrian to tie the game with Chourio advancing to second. A wild pitch moved Chourio to third before he scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly from Leones.
Junior Montero (5-1) earned the win in relief for Carolina, throwing three no-hit innings, walking two and striking out four.
Yaqui Rivera (0-1) suffered the loss for the Shorebirds, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings on three hits and a walk, striking out two.
The Shorebirds continue their six-game series with the Carolina Mudcats on Friday, July 15 at Five County Stadium. The Shorebirds hand the ball to Ryan Long (3-4, 3.78) while the Mudcats counter with Carlos Rodriguez (2-3, 3.38). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
