Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - Brandon Wood homered, drove in three and made several nice defensive plays, including a great throw from deep in the hole at short to nail Phil Avlas for the final out of the game, as the Salt Lake Bees beat the Sidewinders 6-2 on Saturday night.

Nick Green turned in a stellar performance on the mound as he held the Sidewinders bats in check over seven innings. Green allowed just one run on three hits and struck out six. He retired the final 11 men he faced to earn his first win since July 28th.

The Sidewinders jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first. Jesus Merchan singled to right-center to score Justin Upton but Wood drilled a 3-1 pitch from Matt Torra over the wall in left-center for a two run home run in the bottom of the inning to give Salt Lake a 2-1 lead.

Torra (4-5) was the tough luck loser for the Sidewinders. He gave up just two runs over six innings and struck out five.

The Bees blew the game open with a four run bottom of the seventh. Connor Robertson retired Corey Smith to open the frame but could not get another out as he walked Gary Patchett, allowed a single to Brad Coon and a RBI base hit to Bobby Wilson to give the Bees a 3-1 lead. After Dee Brown reached on an error by Frank Curreri to load the bases, Robertson hit Wood with a pitch to force in a run and allowed a two run double to Freddy Sandoval. Robertson was lifted in favor of Dustin Glant who recorded a strikeout and a ground ball to second to finish the inning.

Tucson had a chance to rally in the eighth against Chris Bootcheck but came up short. Jamie D'Antona's bases loaded single to left scored Richard Mercado but Merchan popped to short and Donnie Kelly grounded out to third to end the inning.

Darren O'Day worked a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the win for Salt Lake.

The Sidewinders and Bees wrap up their five game series on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. Right-hander Max Scherzer (1-0, 2.45) starts for Tucson against right-hander Dustin Moseley (6-9, 6.60) for Salt Lake. First pitch is at 1:05 Tucson time. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 12:55.
