Mohegan Wolves News Release
NEW LONDON, Conn. (June 5, 2003) â Mohegan Wolves FB/LB AKEIFF STAPLES won't be traveling with the team to Rochester (NY) this Saturday. Instead, the 6-2, 245-pound rookie from Temple will be heading a little farther west to Buffalo to work out for the Buffalo Bills.
The special invitation-only tryout with the Bills will take place on Monday at the team's practice facility. Staples will be among a group of about 60-70 prospects Buffalo will be eyeing from a variety of positions. A number of signings could also occur, pending the results of the workout.
"This is the kind of opportunity I've been waiting for," Staples said. "I'm just glad to have the chance to show the team what I can do. Hopefully I'll make a good impression.
Staples has played in seven games for the Wolves this season, registering 10 total tackles on defense. He also ranks second on the squad in rushing with 24 yards on nine carries.
"We're extremely happy for Akeiff to have this great opportunity and wish him the best," commented Mohegan Head Coach Mark Stoute. "We look forward to maybe seeing him play on Sundays.
In order to participate, the arenafootball2 office placed Staples on the exempt list until further notice.
Staples played in 40 games over his collegiate career at Temple, which concluded in 2001. The two-time team captain (2000, 2001) recorded 190 career tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and six sacks.
