Xplorers Assigned Players, Robinson Goes On IR

SOUTHAVEN, Miss â The Memphis Xplorers were assigned two players by the af2 office today. The Xplorers, who have been hit by injury, were assigned WR/DB Rodney Griffin and QB Matt Hicks. Also QB Rod Robinson was placed on the short term IR. The Xplorers travel to Florida to take on the Firecats this Saturday night. Memphis returns home Saturday, June 14th, against the Birmingham Steeldogs at the DeSoto Civic Center, located just 15 minutes south of downtown Memphis. Robinson who is 8th in QB rating and 10th in passing yards per game was placed on the short term IR.
"He has a partial tear of the PCL in his knee," Xplorers head coach Danton Barto said. "We expect him to be out two weeks. Will Burch played this past game against Bossier City and did a great job, but we will certainly miss Rod."
Hicks, 6'4 230 pounds, is a veteran of af2. He debuted with Tennessee Valley in the 2000 af2 campaign. In his career he has gone 220-424 (51.8%) for 2,672 yards and has thrown 31 TDs against 24 interceptions.
"This gives us a veteran guy to back up Burch," said Barto. "We know if something were to happen to Burch we would have a capable backup that would allow us to win the game."
Griffin played his college football at Lambuth in Jackson, TN. He was selected 1st team All Mid-South as a cornerback. The 5'11 175 pound Griffin led Lambuth with 67 tackles and had four interceptions.
"Griffin is a very fast player with good coverage skills," Barto said. "We expect good things out of him this weekend at Florida."

XPLORERS FOOTBALL CAMP
Children ages six to 12 who love football will have an opportunity to learn from the pros when the Memphis Xplorers host a football clinic on Saturday, June 14th, beginning at 1 p.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center. Cost is $25 and participants in the camp will receive a ticket to that night's Xplorers game against the Birmingham Steeldogs at the DCC included in the camp registration fee.
