Mohegan Wolves News Release
NEW LONDON, Conn. (April 2, 2003) â The Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) kick off their second season of play this Saturday night when they host the Rochester Brigade at Mohegan Sun Arena. The action is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Every fan that walks through the arena doors that night will also receive a FREE Mohegan Wolves magnet schedule, courtesy of AAA, 103.7 FNX Radio and The Day.
The Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) enter their second season in arenafootball2 with renewed optimism under the direction of new Head Coach Mark Stoute. Stoute, a Connecticut resident since 1985, brings with him over seven years of experience coaching in the Arena Football ranks. He and his staff have brought in potent mixture of veteran talent and young playmakers that will be the foundation for a winning Wolves football team in 2003.
Evidence of that lethal blend came in a recent scrimmage held this past Friday (March 28) at the Connecticut Sportsplex in North Branford. Although no score was kept in the contest, the Wolves clearly looked like an improved team. They more than held their own against the Albany Conquest, a team that last year posted a 13-3 record and were Northeast Division Champions. The Wolves, in difference, managed just three wins in 16 contests in their inaugural season.
Wolves' players to watch in 2003 include last year's af2 "Built Ford Tough Man of the Year" Award winner Jeff Cogell, former New York Giant defensive back Andre Weathers, and former New Haven Ninjas Cy Butler, Anthony Comer and LaJhon Jones. And the talent doesn't end there. A full 2003 roster is attached.
This Saturday's matchup at a glance - Rochester Brigade @ Mohegan Wolves
Rochester leads the head-to-head series with the Wolves, 2-1 overall. All three games were played in 2002. Mohegan, ironically enough, won the first game at Rochester on April 19, 2002 (54-45) and lost the last two contests on their home turf at Mohegan Sun Arena. All three games were hard fought, with the winner being decided by an average of just 7.3 points. In 2003, these two teams will tussle three times as well. After hosting this Saturday 's game, the Wolves will travel to Rochester for games on May 3 and June 7. Last season Rochester earned their first-ever playoff berth with a 7-9 overall record. This year the Brigade welcome back Martino Theus, a talented offensive specialist who recorded 160 receptions for 1,753 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2002.
Mohegan Sun Arena is the premier entertainment venue in Connecticut. Major sporting events, including championship boxing, professional basketball, tennis and bowling, along with world-renowned entertainers such as Tim McGraw, Gloria Estefan, Janet Jackson and Aerosmith have performed in this 10,000-seat venue.
