ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rochester Brigade Head Coach Mark Saunders announced the signing of former Bills QB Mike Cawley from the arenafootball2 league offices.

“I thought we needed to add experience at the quarterback position to compete with Jason (Visconti),” noted Brigade Head Coach Mark Saunders. “Signing Mike does not mean that I don’t have confidence in Jason, but wanted experience and competition at the QB position in order to best position our team for success.”

Cawley entered the NFL in 1996 when he was drafted in the 6th round by the Indianapolis Colts, spending the season on the practice rosters of the Colts and Atlanta Falcons. After moving on to play in the CFL, Cawley was picked up by the Bills and attended their training camp in 1999 and 2000, playing in two Bills preseason games in 2000 before being released at the final cut downs. He then joined the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL, moving to the now defunct XFL’s Las Vegas Outlaws in 2001 and most recently in 2002 with the af2 Quad City Steamwheelers.

“I really just want to win games,” said Cawley. “Football is a sickness and that’s why I keep playing it. In the arena football game you’ve got to have a quick release and be accurate, while focusing on the big picture, and that’s scoring. I’m hopeful I can contribute in anyway that coach asks me.”

Cawley started three seasons at James Madison University, finished his college career passing for 6,482 yards with 42 touchdowns while leading JMU into the Division 1-AA playoffs his senior season. He spent his freshman season at Syracuse University.

The Brigade home opener is Friday, April 18 vs. the Norfolk Nighthawks at 7:30 p.m. It’s also the first Brigade Family 4-Pack game, presented by Krispy Kreme, Zweigle’s, Heluva Good and the Democrat and Chronicle. Brigade Family 4-Packs start at just $29.
