Sudbury Wolves News Release

The Sudbury Wolves played a solid road game on Saturday night but fell one goal short and dropped a close 2-1 decision to the Belleville Bulls.

The Wolves outshot the Bulls 25-22 after two periods of play and the Wolves were tied 1-1 with the hometown Bulls. Things fell apart in the third period when the Wolves handed the Bulls seven minutes of power play time and the Bulls eventually scored the winning goal at the mid-way mark of the third period.

Matt Schmalz continued his strong play for the Wolves since returning from the Montreal Canadiens rookie camp and scored the opening goal of the game on the power play. Jeff Corbett and Kyle Capobianco drew assists on the power play goal. The Bulls tied the game shortly thereafter on a scramble in front of the Wolves net.

Wolves' goaltender Sam Tanguay got his first regular season start and stopped 36 of 38 shots that he faced. Tanguay made an outstanding glove save in the third period that brought Bulls fans to their feet. Tanguay was named the third star of the contest.

The Wolves had numerous chances to score throughout the game. Jacob Harris hit the cross-bar, Matt Schmalz was in all alone, Brody Milne just missed on a pass from Ivan Kashtanov and the Bulls needed video replay to confirm that the puck didn't cross the line in the dieing seconds of the game. Brody Silk also had a close-call in the final minutes of the game.

The Wolves were without the services of Nick Baptiste, Brady Pataki, Chase Hawley and Jonathan Masters. Shots on goal finished 38-32 for the Bulls. The Wolves were 1 for 4 on the power play while the Bulls were 0 for 4 with the man advantage.

The Wolves will close-out the season-opening weekend on Sunday night when they travel to Oshawa to play the Generals. Game time is 6 pm. The Wolves will be without the services of Jacob Harris who was tagged with a match penalty for slew-footing and will receive a minimum two game suspension.
