Mohegan Wolves News Release
NEW LONDON, Conn. (June 19, 2003) â The Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) are home again this Saturday night, June 21, to tackle the Cincinnati Swarm on the heels of three straight victories. The Wolves (7-3) currently stand in second place in the Northeast Division and fourth overall in the American Conference playoff race. The top six teams from each conference (American and National) make the postseason.
"We're finally starting to gel," Mohegan Coach Mark Stoute said. "This game won't be easy, but I think if we play hard and play smart, we'll take care of things.
Saturday's game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena. As part of "Touchdown Towel Night," the first 4,000 fans through the doors will receive a FREE Wolves touchdown towel, courtesy of The Day and WFSB Channel 3.
This Saturday's matchup at a glance â Mohegan Wolves (7-3) vs. Cincinnati Swarm (4-7)
Saturday's game is the first all-time meeting between the Wolves and the Swarm. Cincinnati, a first-year expansion franchise, comes into the contest on a high note after defeating the Green Bay Blizzard, 42-35, on June 14. The Swarm is led on offense by OS James Scott. Scott ranks among the af2's elite in scoring (10th â 138 pts â 23 tds), receptions (3rd â 87) and receiving yards (2nd â 1,150). As a whole, the Swarm's offensive unit has had trouble scoring. They currently rank near the bottom of the league in that department, averaging just 38.6 points per game. Cincinnati's ongoing offensive struggles don't bode well for the team this weekend against the Wolves' stingy defense. Mohegan is the league's top-ranked team in scoring defense, allowing a league-low 35.8 points per game. The Wolves also rank among the league's best in sacks with 19 overall. Offensively, the Wolves will look for a solid showing from returning QB Rob Harding. Harding played almost the entire second half of last Saturday's win against W-B/Scranton after starter Greg Smith went down with an ankle injury. Harding sat out the previous 10 weeks while recovering from a knee injury. Another player to watch on the Wolves this week will be FB/LB LaJhon Jones. Jones leads the team in rushing (145 yards) and rushing touchdowns (9) and is coming off an impressive three-touchdown performance against W-B/Scranton on June 14.
Wolves Game Ten Recap â 6/14/03 â The Mohegan Wolves scored the first 21 points of the night against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and never looked back, cruising to a 55-22 home victory against the Pioneers at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Wolves third consecutive win upped their overall record to 7-3 on the season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton dropped to 3-7 with the loss. FB/LB LAJHON JONES was the main man on offense for Mohegan, scoring three of the team's first four touchdowns en route to earning Game MVP honors. The Wolves leading rusher in 2003 gained 25 yards on six carries and scored twice. Jones also caught a 26-yard touchdown pass. WR/DB ANTHONY COMER and DS ALLISTAIR SEBASTIEN also stood out individually. Comer earned Ironman of the Game accolades for flying all over field on offense against the Pioneers. All totaled, Comer caught four passes for 39 yards, had one rush for a gain of 13 yards, and returned a missed field goal for 10 yards. Sebastien had a big night on defense, returning an interception 30 yards for a touchdown in addition to tallying two tackles. Others recording touchdowns for the Wolves included WR/LB KAZMELL MINOTT (4-yard run), FB/LB RONNIE NICKS (1-yard run) and OS MEL LONG (25-yard reception).
