Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Slider (burgers), who would have ever thought that it would amount to a radio station contest. And how do the Quad City Steamwheelers get into the mix? Well, the Quad City Radio Groups' Dwyer and Michaels held their annual White Castle® run on Thursday. The run comes annually from the Q106.5 morning shows hosts, as there is not a White Castle® in the Quad City area.

The closest White Castle® is located about two and a half hours away in Joliet, Ill. so each year, the duo arranges for a couple of planes to fly to Joliet from Moline and transport the famous White Castles® back to numerous, hungry Quad Citians.

To spite the Quad City Radio Group and Dwyer and Michaels, Cumulus Broadcasting's Dave Levora, host of "Levora in the Morning" on 93 Rock (93.5) and official sponsor of the Quad City Steamwheelers DeckMate Cheerleaders, decided to host a slider run of their own.

Levora decided to gather up a couple of planes, and fly from the Cumulus station in Davenport, Iowa, right across the river to Moline to Hardees and transport the Hardees® Sliders back to the station and give them out for free to the shows listeners and anyone driving by outside the station.

The trick to getting those who were driving by to pull into the station's parking lot was to put three of the DeckMates on the corner with a 93 Rock sign with the words "FREE SLIDERS" on it, and guide them in. The plan worked out perfectly as Anmarie McCrery, Ali Toolate and Ashley Wadsworth brought in many onlookers to have their taste of the sliders.

"We figured that it would be better if we didn't charge our listeners (which the White Castle® run did charge for), and give away the Hardees Sliders," the ‘Evil Genius' as he calls himself, Levora said. "We thought that we would keep the money here in the Quad Cities rather than take it to Joliet and spend money there.

"It was good to help promote our station, Hardees and the Steamwheelers' DeckMates," added Levora. The DeckMates even performed some of their game day routines, while young Jonathan Anderson held the sign allowing for the DeckMates to show off their moves.

Even people from as far away as DeWitt, which is about a half hour drive from the radio station, brought a couch down to enjoy their Sliders. The guys even got the day off from their usual work at Springbrook Country Club to take in the afternoon's activities. Ben Froeschle, Zach Betz, D.J. Weiskircher, and Drew Ande all tried to consume the most Sliders but could not reach the 23 put down by an earlier gentleman in the crowd.

93 Rock also brought in "Hardees Hotties" as they were called, to help serve out the hundreds and hundreds of Sliders. Kim Todd, Venessa Mosier, Maggie Rivard and Alison Ryley were all kept plenty busy and managed the large crowd's demands exceptionally well.

The DeckMates did get a chance to take a break and go on the air with Kimberly Carmichael and talk about the day as well as some upcoming events, such as the DeckMates Car Washes that will take place this Saturday, June 21st and again on July 19th. This weekend the DeckMates will be washing cars at the Best Buy in Davenport from 10am – 2pm and will be at Rudy's Tacos on North Brady Street in Davenport on the 19th from 10am - 2pm.

They also had the opportunity to sign some autographs for the fans in attendance, as well as hand out some posters and Steamin' Hot Deals coupon books.

"It's kind of obvious that all these people had a great time, we'll definitely try and do this again next year," Levora said of a return Slider Day.

The ‘Wheelers begin preparation for the Hawaiian Islanders this weekend and will take on the Islanders next Saturday night at Neil Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, HI. The game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. local time and at 12:30 a.m. Quad City (CDT) time.

After the ‘Wheelers return home from Hawaii, they will then travel to Green Bay, Wis. to take on the Blizzard at brand new Resch Center at 7:30 p.m.

The ‘Wheelers will return home for their last two home games of the regular season on July 12th and 19th. On the 12th, they will take on the San Diego Riptide at 7:30 p.m. Then, what could be the biggest game in the af2 regular season, the ‘Wheelers will take on the (currently) unbeaten Tennessee Valley Vipers at 7: 30 p.m. Both games are at The MARK of the Quad Cities.

Good tickets are still available and can be purchased at The MARK box office or through TicketMaster at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 563.326.1111.
