Chicago Wolves News Release
The Chicago Wolves opened their brief exhibition schedule Thursday night with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Rockford IceHogs at the MetroCentre.
Forward Evan Trupp and defenseman Jordan Schmaltz converted both of the Wolves' shootout attempts while goaltender Jordan Binnington rejected both Rockford tries.
Defenseman Brett Ponich and forward Zach Cohen sparked the Wolves to a 2-0 lead in the opening 22 minutes. Schmaltz and Ryan Tesink set up Ponich's goal at 18:29 of the first period while Cohen scored unassisted at 1:52 of the second. Rockford answered with goals from forwards Casey Thrush and Jeremy Morin.
Binnington picked up where he left off during last season's Calder Cup Playoffs as he stopped 35 of 37 shots over 65 minutes of regulation and overtime. Rockford's Mark Visentin posted 23 saves.
The Wolves close out exhibition play at 7 p.m. Saturday when the Milwaukee Admirals visit the Triphahn Center in Hoffman Estates. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 847-885-7500.
Chicago opens the American Hockey League regular season on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. when Milwaukee comes to Rosemont. The team will celebrate the start of its 22nd season by throwing a free tailgate party from 2 to 6 p.m. in Allstate Arena's West Lot.
