Portland Pirates News Release
Hartford, CT - The Portland Pirates (24-15-1-0) suffered from a lack of offense for the second straight game as they dropped a 4-1 decision to the red hot Hartford Wolf Pack (21-19-2-0) Sunday afternoon at the XL Center in Hartford. The win for the Wolf Pack extended their win streak to seven, while the Pirates dropped their second in as many days.
Hartford's first goal came 5:00 into the first period as Niklas Jensen scored his 7th of the season with assists coming from Marek Hrivik and Ryan Graves.
The Wolf Pack ambushed the Pirates at the beginning of the second period, scoring three goals in the first seven minutes of the period. Jayson Megna scored his 8th of the season with an assist from Luke Adam 53 seconds into the period.
Graves extended Hartford's lead to 3-0 with his 4th of the season 4:30 into the second frame. Ryan Bourque and Brady Skjei were credited with the assists. Adam scored the Wolf Pack's final goal of the night two minutes later with Tyler Brown assisting on Adam's 7th of the year.
Mike Matheson netted his 4th of the season and put the Pirates on the board with an unassisted goal 14:42 into the second period. Matheson's goal ended Portland's goalless streak that ran 144 minutes, 57 seconds.
Portland appeared to have a goal on a shot by Dylan Olsen with 6:06 left in the game, but referee Geoff Miller disallowed the goal, ruling that the Pirates Garrett Wilson redirected the puck in with a high stick.
The Pirates pulled goalie Sam Brittain with five minutes left in the third period hoping to mount a comeback, but couldn't muster another goal.
Brittain (5-7-0) made 23 saves in the loss. Magnus Hellberg (15-10-2) stopped 30 of 31 for the win
