June 4, 2007 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) News Release
New York, June 4, 2007 - Asjha Jones of the Connecticut Sun and Becky Hammon of the San Antonio Silver Stars were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, May 28 through Sunday, June 3.
Jones receives the honor for the first time in her six-year career, after leading the Connecticut Sun to a perfect 2-0 record on the week with an average 27.5 points, 8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.5 blocks while converting 21-of-33 field goal attempts and 13-of-14 free throws.
With a 31-point performance on May 31 against the Chicago Sky, Jones became the third player in franchise history to score 30+ points and the first since the 2003 season. Twenty-six of her 31 points were scored in the second half of the game, when she was 64 percent (9-for-14) on field goals, a perfect 8-for-8 on free throws, and added six rebounds and three assists as the Sun rallied to take a 102-97 overtime win. Two days later, the Sun defeated the Phoenix Mercury 76-67, behind Jones's 24 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, a steal and 10-for-15 shooting.
Hammon led the Silver Stars in scoring in two of three games on the week, and in all but one game this season. She averaged 21 points, five assists, three rebounds and shot 47 percent from the floor (24-for-51), 44 percent from beyond the arc (10-for-23) and 83 percent from the free throw line (5-for-6) as the Silver Stars posted a 2-1 record on the week. The Silver Stars' overall 4-2 record earns them the top spot in the Western Conference.
On May 29, Hammon tallied 26 points, nine assists, six rebounds and hit 10-for-17 field-goals and 6-for-9 three-pointers in a 82-71 victory over the Houston Comets. Two days later, she scored 25 points against the Phoenix Mercury and recorded her third consecutive game with 20 or more points.
Other candidates for WNBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Detroit's Swin Cash, Indiana's Tamika Catchings, New York's Cathrine Kraayeveld and Sacramento's Nicole Powell.
